StaveScore™ is BarrelChatter's proprietary whiskey rating system designed to capture the complete flavor profile of every pour. Unlike simple star ratings, StaveScore breaks down your tasting experience into meaningful dimensions that help you understand and compare whiskeys.
What Makes StaveScore Different
Traditional ratings give you a single number. StaveScore gives you a multidimensional view of flavor, quality, and character - helping you discover whiskeys that match your personal preferences.
The Five Staves
StaveScore is built around five core flavor dimensions - we call them "Staves" after the wooden pieces that form a barrel:
Sweet
Measures sweetness and dessert-like flavors including caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, honey, maple, and butterscotch notes.
Fruit
Captures fruity characteristics from fresh orchard fruits like apple and pear to dark fruits like cherry and plum, as well as citrus and tropical notes.
Spice
Evaluates spicy elements including baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), pepper notes, clove, and other warming characteristics often derived from rye content or barrel aging.
Wood
Assesses oak-derived flavors including char, toast, vanilla (from lignin), tannins, and the overall influence of barrel aging on the whiskey.
Earth
Measures earthy, mineral, and savory characteristics including leather, tobacco, nuts, coffee, dark chocolate, and mineral notes.
Quality Tiers
Based on your ratings, each whiskey receives an overall quality tier:
- Legendary - Exceptional whiskeys that define excellence
- Exceptional - Outstanding quality, memorable pours
- Very Good - Above average, worth seeking out
- Good - Solid quality, enjoyable
- Average - Typical quality, nothing special
- Below Average - Disappointing, not recommended
Character Types
StaveScore also identifies your whiskey's dominant character:
- Traditional - Balanced classic bourbon profile
- Bold - Big, assertive flavors across the board
- Fruited - Fruit-forward profile
- Dessert - Sweet, dessert-like character
- Oaky - Strong wood influence
- Spicy - Spice-forward, often high-rye
- Earthy - Savory, mineral-driven
The Radar Chart
Your StaveScore is visualized as a radar (spider) chart with five points - one for each Stave. This creates a unique "fingerprint" for each whiskey:
- Shape shows the dominant characteristics
- Size indicates overall intensity
- Symmetry reveals balance
- Compare charts to find similar whiskeys
